Moorland Dress
Heather is a gentle and strong plant. It is a memory-keeper. Thickets of heather carpeting old stones hide and preserve the ancient history of their land. Beautiful and fragile, its bell-shaped flowers quietly hum in the wind long-forgotten songs. Like heather, this dress is strong and delicate; it will keep you warm and safe, when the harsh cold winds will rise.
Moorland is a fitted silhouette dress flared at the bottom, with a round neckline and a slightly raised waistline. A panel of cables accents the waistline and creates a fit. Wide sleeves are adorned with patterned cuffs. Small rolls accentuate the shoulder and give originality to the dress outlines.
The dress is worked from top down, mostly in stockinette stitch. After the armholes have been shaped, the back and front parts are joined together and worked as one piece. The pattern is worked on both right and wrong sides. The neckline is finished with an i-cord.
The sleeves are worked top down, too. You begin with picking up sts around the finished armholes. Short rows are used to shape the sleeve cap, then sleeves are worked in the round and finished with a folded picot edge.
The dress length is adjustable. As it worked from top down, you may stop at any time choosing the comfortable length.
Difficulty level - moderate.
To make this dress, you have to know how to knit short rows, cables, and be able to read knitting charts.
Gauge: 24 sts х 38 rows = 10 х 10 cm in stockinette stitch.
Suggested yarn: KNOLL Soft Donegal. Approximately 400 m/100 g.
Yardage for the basics model: Size 44-46 - about 750 g, size 48-50 - about 850-900 g.
Needles and notions: Knitting needles 2.5 mm - 3 mm, or any other size to reach the gauge; spare circular needles or cords/stitch holders; tapestry needle; blocking pins.
Markers: I prefer to use removable markers and place them directly on the stitch, not on the needle between stitches. Of course, you are welcome to use any method of marking your stitches, just keep this note in mind while reading the following instructions, and adjust stitch counts, if necessary.
Attention! All st counts include selvage sts!
What is a selvage stitch? In my country, most knitters are used to always slip the first st of the row purlwise and always purl the last one to form an attractive chain edge (selvage). We call them ‘selvage stitches’.
Sizes: 44-46(S-M), 48-50(L).
