This project was inspired by three main factors: amazing and admirable KNOLL Soft Donegal yarn; intricate Shetland lace patterns from “Heirloom Knitting” by Sharon Miller; and photos of Moray Firth, one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines.

I invite you to make a free silhouetted flared cardigan with a round neckline, and straight sleeves. It’s knitted in stockinette stitch and adorned with lacework inserts. This seamless cardigan is worked from top down; after the armholes have been shaped, the back and front panels are joint and worked as one piece. The lace pattern is worked on both sides of the piece (right and wrong).

The sleeves are worked top down. You begin with picking up sts around the finished armholes. Short rows are used to shape the sleeve cap; then sleeves are worked down the the cuffs in the round.

A simple narrow trim is made as one piece along front, neckline, and bottom edges.
I chose a beaded crochet trim for the cardigan shown on photos. You may finish your cardigan with I-cord, add a couple of buttons, etc.

Difficulty Level - moderate to advanced.

Skills required: short row shaping; lace knitting and purling; increases (M1R; M1L; YO, CO); decreases (k2tog; ssk; CDD knit and purl; p2tog; ssp); chart reading; I-courd (optional); picking up sts along vertical and horizontal edges; backward loop cast on.

Size:S-M, L, XL

Gauge:​ 26 sts х 40 rows = 10 х 10 см (4”) in st st.

Suggested Yarn: KNOLL Soft Donegal fingering weight (approximately 400 m\100 g, or 480 yards/3.5 oz).300-350 g (app 12.5 oz) for size 44-46; 400-450 g (14-16 oz) for size 48-50; 450-500 g for size 52-54.

Needles and Notions:
Knitting needles 2.5-3.5 mm(single pointed and circular DPN), or any other size to reach the above gauge; spear needles or st holders; st markers; tapestry needle; buttons and beads (optional)
