The yarn used for the model shawl, Snicklefritz Sock, is wonderfully springy to knit and comes in a single large hank so there is no splicing and no worries about matching dye lots as with single skeins of hand-dyed sock yarn.

This is an extended half-circle shawl constructed as described by Elizabeth Zimmerman and Martha Waterman as a half-pi, but with a bit of extra width to go over the shoulders. It is knit back and forth from the top edge downward, with increases made in horizontal rows that double the stitch count all at once. The distance between the increase rows doubles with each iteration. The body of the shawl is in garter stitch interrupted by horizontal pattern bands featuring simple lace, dropped stitches, and crossed stitches. The nature of the garter body and the pattern bands help to break up the multicolor yarn without competing with the colors.
