Moreton Street cowl
This cowl was first offered as the “free with purchase” knit pattern for Northern Ohio’s Yarn Discovery Tour for River Colors Studio. I am offering it at 50% off until end of day EST September 30, 2021 with code YDT21. Enjoy!
Shortly after I moved to London in the early part of 2018 I discovered a newly opened yarn shop within walking distance of where I lived during my short stay overseas. Beautiful Knitters Yarn Shop resides on Moreton Street in the Pimlico area of London and quickly became a haven of friendships, crafty goodness and great memories. This cowl was designed as an ode to those special times.
The cowl begins with an optional provisional cast on (directions for one method are included but any method will work) and is knit on the bias with just enough interest to keep from getting bored but simple enough to allow engagement in friendly conversations. Once complete, the provisional cast on is removed and live stitches are grafted together or joined with a three needles bind off for a seamless cowl or joined by seaming cast on stitches with bound off stitches. Knitter’s choice.
The pattern is written in two sizes. The small size uses most of a 100 gram fingering weight yarn and makes a lightweight single loop for a transitional piece and the large size uses two 100 gram skeins to form a larger loop that can be worn doubled around the neck for cozy warmth in cooler temps.
Please note that 100 gram skeins that have at least 420 yards are recommended so as not to run out of yarn. Both samples used most of the yarn and differences in gauge can affect yardage requirements.
The large cowl pictured used every yard of 2 skeins of Wishbone yarns Flax-Flower (394 yards per 100 grams) and the small cowl used one skein of Malabrigo Sock (440 yards per 100 grams) with several grams leftover.
