Morning Star Hat
This hat and it’s bulky weight cousin Danny’s Hat feature a stitch pattern that was in my mind for quite a while but this took a lot of attempts to bring it into being on my needles (and on paper!) - sorry to those who have been waiting for it since I teased social media with my photos back in 2021.
Inside or out, Morning Star is a beautifully adaptable hat, lending itself to a folded brim, straight brim, beanie style or an elongated body for a slouchy fit. The softer the yarn you use, the more sumptuous the hat that you create.
The details:
Sizes (to fit head circumference:)
Small Adult: 43-51cm (17-20 inches)
Large Adult: 53 - 61cm (21-24 inches)
Due to the nature of the fabric, this hat will fit a large range of head measurements within one size. If anything my ‘to fit’ measurements are conservative. The pattern also contains information on how to adapt further.
Yarn Requirements
Fingering weight yarn.
Sample used Cloudborn Fibers Merino Superwash Sock Twist approx. 250-290m (262-317yds)
Pink sample used hand-dyed 80% superwash merino/20% nylon blend.
Needles & Notions
2.75mm (US2) circular needles or dpns
darning needle
stitch markers (optional)
Gauge
48 sts & 48 rows = 10cm (4 inches) in k2, p2 rib
The horizontal gauge is much more important than the row gauge as the pattern gives information on measurements for height at the relevant points.
Note r.e. gauge
- Please note that I am generally a tight knitter so you may find it necessary to change needle size to match gauge. A number of my testers did.
- The yarn used for the sample was on the lighter end of fingering weight yarn.
- I provide the needle size that I used to knit the hat but it is the gauge that is important to match, not the needle size.
