I came across this motif on the side of a beautiful Moroccan building. Once charted, I added the smaller motif “knots,” the basketweaving for some complementary texture, and the rounded triangle edging along the bottom.

The wrap is knitted sideways, so you won’t need to cast on or bind off several hundred stitches at a time.

This pattern is fully written out (yes, all 421 lines) and is fully charted. I did this because I wanted to make this pattern accessible for all levels of knitters - if you are a beginning knitter, everything is written out and illustrated for you. If you are a more experienced knitter, you will be able to pick up the pattern quite easily and may not need to read every row, but it is there if you need it.

The only thing that I did not write out fully is in regards to the cabling - if the stitches in the row below were knitted, then knit them when cabling. Same goes for the purl stitches. Always work the stitches the same as they are in the row below. There are no special symbols or whatnot to differentiate. Just c2l or c2r.

Stitches you’ll need to know:

k – knit
p – purl
k2tog – knit two stitches together
skpo – sl 1 stitch knitwise, k 1, pass slipped
stitch back over
c2l - cable two stitches left
c2r - cable two stitches right
m 1 – using LHN, lift strand between sts from front and k loop through the back to make st.
m 1 p – using LHN, lift strand between sts from front and p this through the back to make st.
– repeat the sequence of stitches in brackets until told to stop. For example, p 8, k 2 until last 8, p 8 means that you will keep doing the pattern p 8, k 2, p 8, k 2, p 8, k 2 until the last 8 stitches in the row, then you will p 8 to finish up that row.
