These Scandinavian inspired colourwork mittens are knitted in the round. The colourwork instructions are chart only.

The pattern knits up to one size, knitting a mittern with a circumference of approx 21 cm and length of approx 24 cm.

The grey/white mitterns in the pattern pictures are knitted with West Yorkshire Spinners’ Jacob DK.

The red/white and yellow/white pairs are knitted with wool from a local herd of Hampshire Downs sheep, and dyed with natural dyes. However, most DK weight yarns will be fine for knitting the mittens with, and each mittern requires approximately 65m of yarn.

The Norfolk Coast (UK), has a long connection with Scandinavia, as does most of the east Anglian coast, mainly due to the Viking raids of the 8th Century.

There are many place names in the area that still hark back to the days of the Vikings, usually places whose names include ‘ham’ or ‘thorpe’. For example: Dereham, Aylsham, Binham, Baconsthorpe, Burnham Thorpe, Haddicoe Thorpe, etc.

Morston is a now a small village on the North Norfolk Coast, with a population of around 100 (2011 census). The Norfolk Coast Path National Trail passes through Morston, particulalry Morston Quay (where it’s also possible to catch a boat for a trip to see the seal conlonies on Blakeney Point).

As with all stretches of the North Norfolk Coast in the winter (and often in spring and autumn too), gloves. or mittens, for keeping hands warm are an essential piece of winter walking kit.
