The pattern has two versions - one made in overlay mosaic style and one in inset mosaic (overlay changes colors and cuts the yarn after each row, with inset you do two rows per color and do not cut the yarn). I was inspired by repeating patterns in nature and it reminds me of a series of paths along a journey. It’s a perfect pattern for using up your stash of yarn!

Each pattern includes a chart, with drop-down stitches marked with an ‘X’ and written instructions for each row. This pattern is suitable for someone who is intermediate at crochet, particularly those who have done some mosaic crochet before. I have included some basic instructions and photos, and links for some of my favorite video tutorials, including my own technique for avoiding loose chains at the back of your inset mosaic piece.

I give some ideas for making a blanket or a cushion cover, but the repeating mosaic pattern could also be used for a scarf, table runner or wall hanging, amongst many other possibilities. The pattern has a fairly large repeat - 28 stitches across (and 42 rows up) - but the same series of stitches appears every 6 rows (they just move to the side each time), so you can choose a repeat of six for the height of your project if scaling the pattern up or down.

This is my first inset mosaic design - it’s not a simple pattern repeat so may not be best for beginners to inset style. If you are an experienced tester in inset, I am looking for testers for future projects and feedback on this one is very welcome: echocrochet@gmail.com

For my blanket, 30” wide x 42” tall, I used approximately 1300yards/400g color A (background) yarn, and 1050yards/320g color B (pattern) in Stylecraft Special DK in blues (empire, turquoise, aster and sherbert) and pinks/ purples (pomegranate, fuschia purple, magenta and violet).
