This hat is based on ideas found in the works of Barbara G. Walker – namely the 2-color garter stitch short-row pinwheel used for the crown, and mosaic patterns used for the bands. Knit all in one piece from the top down, it is finished with a rolled stockinette stitch edge.

Methods used and described in the pattern include:

  • provisional cast-on chained directly onto the working needle
  • garter stitch
  • garter stitch grafting
  • mosaic knitting.

Three mosaic patterns suitable for working the band are included in both charted and written form.

The hat is knit with 2 contrasting colors. I often use A = solid color and B = variegated/novelty yarn with multiple colors. If using two solid colors, follow the color recommendation for light and dark given with the mosaic pattern you intend to use for the band. You will need 90-110 yards of worsted weight yarn in each color; the color used for the rolled edge finish will use more yardage than the other color.
