This pattern is for a crochet snowflake hat, made using overlay mosaic techniques.

This is a fairly simple pattern suitable for someone who is intermediate at crochet. Because the hat is worked in the round, there are no ends to worry about when we switch yarn colours which makes it a good beginner mosaic crochet project.

The pattern includes written, step-by-step instructions, charts with drop-down stitches marked with an X, a few illustrative photos and links to video tutorials that may help with the techniques involved (videos were not made by me but are my recommendations for crocheters who find these helpful). You can download the pattern in either US or UK crochet terminology.

I give some instructions for adjusting the sizing of the hat by increasing the brim/ circumference. The basic pattern produces a fairly slouchy hat style as the mosaic section gives a decent height to the hat which means it probably won’t make an ideal tight beanie or child’s hat, especially if you add a pompom which pulls it down slightly. My hat (pictured) has a circumference of 20” and a height of 10” with the brim unfolded/ 8.5” folded, I give an adaptation for a slouchier style if desired.

For my hat, I used approximately 245yards/68g color A (blue) yarn, and 105yards/35g color B (white). I used DK weight (group 3) yarn, Scheepjes Merino Soft in Raphael and Madeline Tosh pashmina yarn in ‘Danger Will Robinson’ (this yarn isn’t that widely available but I’d use Scheepjes ‘Ansingh’ I think for the most similar effect).

I also have a repeating version of the snowflake pattern suitable for blankets and cushions & a Christmas tree skirt with the snowflake design - you can buy them in a bundle with this hat for £1-2 off your total (no code needed, but cannot be combined with other offers/ codes).
