This is a little cap that will keep a newborn’s head warm and colorful. Worked in knit, purl, and slip stitches in soft machine-washable wool, it is easy care and elastic to accommodate the head of a growing baby for a bit, as well as being a decorative accessory. The entire cap is worked with only one color per row. The main color yarn is twisted with the secondary color being worked only at the beginning of each row.

About the yardage needed:
Even the main color, which was white, used less than a half of a skein of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn. As an alternative, one could use one skein of a variegated sportweight yarn in lieu of the other colors. Of course, one could also use any combination of colors, but it is recommended that the main color should contrast with the other colors so that the pattern will “pop.”

To enlarge this pattern, use all DK weight yarn. To make this pattern for a preemie, use fingering weight yarn.

I recommend using machine-washable wool rather than acrylic or plant-based fiber. Wool is an excellent temperature regulator and very elastic. Busy mums and dads will appreciate the easy care of super wash.
