Summer Kitchen 2: Moss Stitch Cloth.

Moss Stitch Cloth is the second project in the Summer Kitchen series! It’s a dishcloth. It features textures (good for scrubbing) and eyelets (good for quick drying/hanging up), and a crisp border to help it keep its shape. (A borderless version is also available, but the border’s nice.)

The project is knit using two strands of 8/2 Brassard Cottolin held together. Substitutions may behave differently, but yarn substitutions seem pretty inevitable, since this is a little obscure: 8/2 cotton or cotton, linen, or cotton-linen yarns or threads that equate to lace or light sock yarn should work.

Gauge:
Gauge is a relatively breezy 16 sts and 28 rows over 4”10cm in moss stitch pattern, and that’s important for yardage requirements etc. But keep in mind that this should shrink substantially—I think the rule is around 25-30% for cotton and linen— so over time, especially with machine washing and drying, you’ll end up with a smaller, plusher cloth.

Materials:
Two spools, or about 240 total yds, of Brassard Cottolin. Sample shown in Bleu Pale. (I’m pretty sure it’s Bleu Pale.)
1 24” circular needle US5/3.75mm, or size needed for gauge.
4 removable stitch markers
One crochet hook, in size suited to yarn
Smooth scrap yarn in similar weight to working (held together) thread
Tapestry needle

Measurements:
The sample cloth is 12”x12” or 30cm x 30cm. Keep in mind that this measurement reflects only a light handwashing and blocking; when this project is machine washed, it’ll get smaller.

The borderless cloth is about an inch (2.54cm) smaller in all directions, so it’s around 11”x11” or 28cm x 28cm.
