The Mother-in-law shawl came to being when my mother wanted to make a quick knit shawl for my grandmother, her mother-in-law. With Christmas coming I also needed a quick shawl to knit for my mother-in-law. My mother shared her pattern. And when a customer came into the shop and needed a quick knit for her mother-in-law we passed along the pattern and decided to call it the Mother-in-law Shawl. The shawl is a simple lace pattern with all even rows being purled.
