Mount Rainier - National Park Blanket Square
Pattern Inspiration:
This year, 2016, is the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Smart Knits - a knitting group out of Logan, Utah - thought that a great way to celebrate the National Park Service and the sublime lands that it protects was to design a National Parks blanket. The blanket is made up of 60 blanket squares - one to celebrate each of the 59 National Parks and one square to celebrate the National Park Service itself.
Mount Rainier National Park was established as our fourth national park in 1899. Located just outside of Seattle Washington, Mount Rainier is the highest point of the Cascade Range. Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak within the contiguous United States and is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world with a summit of 14,411 ft. It’s last eruption was approximately 150 years ago. The park highlights a diverse ecosystem from old-growth forests, to high-meadow wildflower fields, to lakes, rivers, glaciers and more. As a child the designer grew up viewing this ‘floating mountain’ crest just above the clouds in Tacoma, Washington. The mountain is an iconic site across the Seattle and Tacoma skylines and is popular for sledding and mountain climbing. Every year thousands of climbers successfully ascend the mountain, as seen in this square’s design.
