Mountain Laurel Mittens
Mountain Laurel Mittens is the first of the three patterns included in my “Grand Mitten” collection named in honor of my three grandchildren born around the time of the pandemic. This pair features a contrasting cuff and simple, easy to follow hand chart. Worked in DK weight yarn, this pattern works up quickly while still having enough sts for an interesting colorwork pattern.
The cuff begins with several rounds of all-knit, which results in a neat, rolled edge. The striped section uses purls only on second rounds of a color which eliminates the “blips” that show through when changing colors with purl sts. The thumb gusset is placed slightly toward the palm side of the mitten, resulting in a comfortable fit that doesn’t cause a distortion of the pattern.
