This cowl was inspired by colorful lichen on stone walls on the island of Mousa off the coast of the Shetland mainland. It is worked in the round in a stranded technique with no increases or decreases. Yardage requirements include enough yarn for swatching.

Finished size: 20” (50.8 cm) circumference, 7” (17.8 cm) width. (Note: Use smaller/larger needles for smaller/larger size.)

Gauge: 4”(10 cm) = 32 sts and 33 rows.
Note: Obtaining both stitch and row gauge is ideal; however, if you have to make a choice, try to get row gauge. Stitch gauge can be achieved through blocking if you are not too far off. Also, try using wooden needles which have more grip on the yarn.

Yarn: Yarn: Jamieson & Smith 2ply Jumper weight yarn, 100% Shetland Wool, approx. 25g, 125 yards/115m.

Color A (81) – approx. 75 yrds
Color B (54) – approx. 75 yrds
Color C (27) – approx. 75 yrds
Color D (203) – approx. 50 yrds
Color E (FC12) – approx. 50 yrds
Color F (FC38) – approx. 50 yrds
Color G (125) – approx. 40 yrds
Color H (91) – approx. 40 yrds

Needles: US 2 (2.75mm) and US 3 (3.25mm) needles for preferred method of working small circumferences (i.e. 2 circulars, Magic Loop, or double pointed needles).
