This pattern is for the mouse, its outfit and accessories as well as the opening fire engine!

Please be aware that the fire engine is large (measurements are given below) and so this is a fairly time-consuming project! The pattern contains lots of photos to help you every step of the way. It is written in English, using American crochet terms. All of my patterns have been independently tested prior to publication.

You will need:
Yarn of your choice. Yarn weight doesn’t really matter - the size of your project will simply turn out bigger or smaller! I used King Cole Cherished DK (equivalent to weight 3 / light worsted weight) and my finished mouse measures approximately 10cm tall. My finished fire engine measures approximately 37cm long, 15.5cm wide and 23.5cm tall. Please ensure that you use the same weight yarn throughout your project.

For the mouse & clothing (pages 4 - 11), you will need the following colours:

  • Main mouse colour - I used pale grey or cream (approx. 23.5m per mouse).
  • Nose / ears / feet / tail colour - I used pale pink (approx. 13m per mouse).
  • Trousers & jacket main colour - I used light brown (approx. 19.5m per outfit).
  • Helmet & Stripe colour - I used yellow (approx. 12.5m per outfit).
  • Helmet detail colour - I used black (approx. 3m per outfit).

For the fire engine & accessories (pages 12 - 45), you will need the following colours:

  • Main Colour - I used red (approx. 424m).
  • Base / Shutter / Ladder Colour - I used light grey (approx. 326m).
  • Inner Walls / Wheel / Wheel Arch Colour - I used dark grey (approx. 302m).
  • Front Grill / Tyres Colour - I used black (approx. 53.5m).
  • Top Light / Water Tank Colour - I used blue (approx. 64m).
  • Reg Plate / Headlights Colour - I used white (approx. 4m).
  • Stripes / Hose / Inner Flames Colour - I used yellow (approx. 96m).
  • Middle Flames Colour - I used mustard (approx. 18.5m).
  • Outer Flames Colour - I used orange (approx. 33.5m).

Please note - The amount of yarn used will vary according to yarn weight, hook size and stitch tension so these measurements are only a rough guide. The pattern refers to the colours that I used, however these can be substituted for colours of your choice.

You will also need:

  • A suitable size hook for the yarn you have chosen - I used a 4mm hook.
  • A pair of 6mm black safety eyes per mouse.
  • Some toy stuffing.
  • Small amounts of black finer yarn or thread for adding the details to the mouse’s face.
  • 2 buttons per mouse for fastening the trousers & jacket. The ones I used were 15mm in diameter.
  • 2 buttons for fastening the fire engine shutter & ladder. The ones I used were 20mm in diameter.
  • ‘7 count’ plastic canvas. I had a 26cm x 33cm sheet (that’s 10.25 x 13.5 inches) & I used 5 sheets (this includes using 2 layers of plastic inside the base panel). A higher count (that’s the number of holes per inch) will mean the plastic is more bendy so stick to 7 count if possible. If your plastic feels very bendy, you may wish to insert multiple layers of plastic into the panels to make your fire engine stronger.
  • Other tools you will need are a tapestry needle, some scissors and some stitch markers.
