Moycullen Shawl
The Moycullen Shawl is named after a peaceful village in Co. Galway, Ireland, on the west coast of the country, not far from Clifden and Oughterard.
This village is known for its beautiful Connemara Marble, which is both subtle and highly visually textured. Beautiful from all angles, just like this textured shawl that’s as lovely and textured on one side as the other.
There’s no wrong side with this highly textured shawl. One side has more defined lines so whether you like strong lines or more subtle lines this shawl has both. The Moycullen Shawl is knit in DK weight yarn paired with silk mohair. The combo creates a luxurious piece that feels amazing wrapped around you. And if mohair is not your thing, it is just as cozy knit either in DK or worsted.
This triangle-shaped shawl—with both written and charted directions—is perfect for an intermediate knitter but engaging enough for an advanced one. It comes in two sizes and is filled with knits, purls, and a garter border. This timeless design is very wearable either around the shoulders traditionally or worn around the neck like a scarf.
Needle: US 9 (5.5 mm), 40” (100 cm) circular needle or needles needed to get gauge.
Suggested Yarn:
Shibui Knits Haven, DK weight, 3 (4) skeins 80% Extrafine Merino/20% Cashmere; 160 yards (146 m)/ 50 grams or any DK weight yarn of your choosing.
Shibui Knits Silk Cloud, Lace weight, 2 skeins 60% kid mohair/40% silk; 330 yards (300 m)/25 grams or any lace mohair yarn of your choosing.
Sample is Large size and it’s knit in Shibui Knits Haven, DK weight, Pollen, approx. 750 yards (686 m) and Shibui Knits Silk Cloud, Lace weight, Pollen, approx. 750 yards (686 m).
The Shibui skeins had extra yardage so I was able to get a large out of 4 skeins of Haven and 2 skeins of Silk Cloud, with very little left over.
Note: This can be knit without mohair by just using a DK or worsted weight yarn of your choosing.
Gauge: 14.5 stitches/24 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in body texture.
Other Notions: 4 stitch markers for edge and center stitches, 16 stitch markers for lace (optional but suggested for ease), darning needle
Special Techniques: Knit, purl, charts (written directions available), increases, decreases, cast on & bind off
Sizes:
Small: 58“ x 24” (147 x 61 cm)
Large: 86“ x 34” (218 x 86 cm)
