Mr. Beanie is a fun and easy to make crocheted beanie that you can easily make in one evening.

I’ve been making these for years and since they only take me about 3 hours to make, it’s my go to Quick-make gift pattern, for both toddlers and grownups alike!
You only need 2 x 50 g skeins of yarn for each beanie, so chances are you already have something in your stash you can make it with. And by adding these cute fur pompoms, I think they make for a very proper and nice present. I’ve used all kinds of yarn for these beanies, so I know for a fact that you can use any yarn that is just similar in weight.

Yarn

The beanie requires aran weight yarn and you can use any type you like, as long as it’s suitable for a 4.5 or 5 mm hook. The sizes are easy to control and change as well, so no worries!

You need 2 x 50 g skeins for all sizes.

I used Merino Tweed from Katia, 50 g = 80 m. (51% wool, 43% acrylic, 6% viscose)

You also need stitch markers

I also tend to add a faux fur pompom to my Mr. Beanies, but that’s not a requirement and you can of course either make a pompom with yarn yourself, or just leave it plain without a pompom.

Hook

4.5 mm or 5 mm

Gauge

11 rows & 18 ST in HDC = 10 cm
Just a similar gauge will do fine.

Sizes

The beanie comes in 3 predetermined sizes, but once you’ve made this beanie once, you see how easy it is to adjust the sizes and even use other weight of yarn, just by using a beanie of a size you like for guidance!

Medium (M) fits all ages from 10 yrs and up, for example both me and my 10 year old son use this size.

Large (L) is a bit wider, for same ages but then fits a slightly larger head.

Kids/small (S) for toddlers and kids from 2-5 years old, approximately.

S (M) L

Circumference of beanie:
approx. 38 (44) 48 cm wide
Length:
approx. 18 (22) 22 cm long

Abbreviations (US terms)

ST = stitch/stitches
CH = chain stitch
SS = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
HDC = half double crochet
General instructions

The beanie is worked flat, back and forth, sideways from top to bottom and back, and is then sewed together on the side and at the top.

Lastly you add a pompom to the top if you like.
