I have used cotton that is suitable for a size 3 hook, but you can use any type of yarn and hook as long as they fit each other.
Using a size 3 hook with suitable yarn Mr. Octopus will be approximate 13cm (arms not included).

Why Mr. Octopus is great for newborns.
The structure of the arms on the octopus reminds newborns of the umbilical cord.
Here in Dk a lot of hospital wards for premature babies collect the octopuses to give to the premature babies because it calms them down and makes them feel safe when they hold on to the
arms.
