MULDA scarf
Never have I ever thought I was actually going to like working cables. I used to think cable knitting was complicated and veeeery tedious.
Until I dreamed up another textured scarf with a very symmetrical pattern stitch, cables did not even appear on my inspiration boards on Pinterest. One day, with quite a lot of doubts, I grabbed my needles, worked a small swatch and… I’ve fallen in love!
MULDA scarf is a triangular scarf knitted in Half Fisherman’s Rib
cable stitch. The elongated arms of the triangle with acute angles
are shaped by increasing sts at the beginning and the end of the scarf.
As a matter of fact it is an extremely easy and repetitive project that pleasantly keeps your mind occupied. And it definitely is what I love most about knitting - those beautiful moments of calmness when I can get away from the worries of everyday life and just focus completely on what my hands are doing.
You can download a PDF preview with the most important information such as size guide, detailed measurements, yarn requirement, needles and notions in ENG and PL here.
Sizes:
There are three sizes to choose from: small, medium and large, which can actually qualify as a shawl. You can modify the scarf height and width to your needs or stash! As all of my patterns, this one too includes detailed instructions for modifications.
Suggested yarn:
75 (100) 175 g Cardiff - Cashmere Classic
or
75 (100) 175 g Lamana - Como
or
75 (100) 175 g Sandnes Garn - Alpakka Følgetråd
If you have less yarn in your stash and want to use it, just follow the instructions for modification to knit a size smaller than size 1!
Swatch and gauge:
When it comes to MULDA scarf achieving the indicated gauge swatch is not as crucial as usual, but it is worth checking anyways. Working the pattern stitch too tightly may result in a quite thick fabric. Also, with differences in gauge, you may run out of yarn when knitting.
Gauge, measured from the swatch knitted flat using the pattern stitch, on 3 mm US 2.5 needles, after washing and blocking:
10 x 10 cm 4x4 in = 27 sts x 53 (worked) rows
Mind that in Fisherman’s Rib the visible rows are RS rows - that’s why in the gauge above you can see “worked” rows. Count all the worked rows.
Techniques:
- Long Tail Cast On
- Half Fisherman’s Rib with yarn overs
- Increasing methods: (bro + yo + brk) and Knitted Cast On
- Decreasing methods: k2togtbl and k3togtbl
- Cable knitting
- I-cord Bind Off
All techniques used in the pattern are described there in detail.
