About:
The Mullagh Hat—filled with cables and texture—is named for the small village of Mullagh in County Clare, Ireland not far from the Atlantic coast. The rustic, rocky shore of this part of Ireland inspired all of the intertwining texture in this exciting hat. The
Mullagh Hat is engaging from the first stitch until the last. It’s suitable for an intermediate knitter but interesting enough for a more advanced one. It is a fun knit that creates a hat that fits as comfortably on a teenage girl as it does on a full-grown man. This timeless knit will be one that you reach for over and over—for years to come.
Needles:
US 4 (3.5 mm) and US 5 (3.75 mm), 16” (40 cm) circular needles or needles needed to get gauge. US 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles for crown decreases.
Suggested Yarn: The Knit Apothecary Worsted, Worsted weight, 1 skein 100% Eco-Processed Organic Merino wool; 213 yds (195 m)/115 g or any worsted weight yarn of your choosing.
Sample Knit as Beanie in The Knit Apothecary Worsted, Worsted weight, used Merlot, approx. 180 yds (165 m).
Gauge: 24.5 stitches/29.5 rounds = 4” (10 cm) square in body texture using larger needles. 13-st moss stitch ring = 2” (5 cm) at center
Note: Gauge in stockinette was 19 stitches/24 rounds = 4” (10 cm) square
Other Notions: Cable needle, darning needle, stitch markers.
Special Techniques:
Cables, cast on & bind off, charts (written directions available), decreases.
Sizes:
Beanie (Slouchy), both to fit average adult head sizes 20-24“ (51-61 cm) head circumference.
Final Measurements:
Beanie: 17” (43 cm) circumference x 8.5” (21.5 cm) tall.
Slouchy: 17” (43 cm) circumference x 11” (28 cm) tall.
