A multi coloured motif baby blanket, knitted in one piece but with the impression of the blanket being made of individual patches. The pattern uses worsted (10 ply) yarn, I have knitted this in Rowan’s Handknit Cotton yarn but an alternative yarn quality can be used as long as the required tension is achieved.
The tension required is 20 stitches x 28 rows to a 10 cm/ 4” square of stocking / stockinette stitch on 4mm needles.
The blanket requires five separate colours: 765 m / 837 yds of the main colour and 85 m / 93 yds of each of the motif colours.
The pattern comes with instructions for a single size blanket, measuring approximately 73 x 108 cm (28.75” x 42.5”). This would be suitable for a baby’s cot or crib.
The blanket is knitted in one piece with a moss stitch border and requires intarsia and stranded methods of knitting. The blanket is finished with Swiss Darning and French Knot detail. The ability to work from a chart is required to knit the motif and stranded designs.
Skills required: cast on, bind off, knit and purl, intarsia (motif) knitting, stranded knitting, Swiss darning and French Knot embroidery.
The recommended needle size is 4mm (UK 8, US 6). I have used circular needles (knitting back and forth) for ease of knitting because of the number of stitches.
