A pattern to show off the beauty of variegated yarn - the changes in knitting direction create stripes that change directions too: vertical, horizontal, angular.

The individual parts of the mittens are worked using different techniques and are worked in different directions: The cuff is worked flat and knit sideways; lower hand and upper hand are worked in the round, part of the thumb gusset section is worked flat in short-rows.

Sizes
S, M and L to fit hand circumference of approximately 16.25 (18.75, 21.25) cm 6.5 (7.5, 8.25)”. Hand length without cuff 16.5 (18, 19) cm 6.5 (7, 7.5)”; cuff length is 5.75 cm 2.25”. Both lengths are adjustable (explained in the notes of the pattern).

Material
1 skein of fingering weight yarn with a yardage of approximately 366 m (400 yds) per 100 g
2.25 mm / US size 1 DPNs or circular needle(s), for your preferred way to knit in the round
3 stitch markers, darning needle, waste yarn or stitch holder

The pattern is written for the Provisional Crochet Cast On which requires additionally: waste yarn and a crochet hook one or two sizes larger than the knitting needles. The cast on method can be replaced with any provisional cast on method.

This pattern was the Blue Moon Fiber Arts Rockin’ Sock Club members pattern in November 2014. It came with a bonus pattern for a headband to make best use of the
whole skein of yarn. The headband is no longer part of the mittens pattern, but is available for free as an individual pattern: Multidirectional Headband.
