Munising

Skills Needed: Cast on, bind off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, knit with two colors
Munising, Michigan is home to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, truly a national treasure. If you find yourself there on vacation, head onto “Mother Superior” to see the sandstone cliffs from the greatest of the Great Lakes, a tour not soon forgotten. There you’ll learn the names of the different rock formations and see how the minerals from the surrounding area have colored the rocks as the water seeps back to the lake. The colors and patterns created with Mother Nature’s paintbrush are something that photos don’t do justice-you’ll want to see it to believe it. If the wind is too rough for a boat tour, there are trails that will take you to hidden waterfalls and an interpretive center that will give you a great photo op of Miner’s Castle…perfect for a selfie in a Munising hat or cowl.
Using only five colors, you can knit a national treasure of your own in the form of this slouchy hat or cowl. The interplay of color and shifting pattern will make a novice knitter feel clever, and an experienced knitter smile at how quickly the pattern works up. The zig zags and diamonds are classic design elements, but your use of color will make it unique. Use up scraps, or choose colors to reflect the landscape near you—either way, Munising will be a project to cherish…great to wear on the boat tour at Pictured Rocks. When you’re there, let’s make a plan to meet up for pasties at Muldoon’s or coffee at Falling Rock book store and knit together, shall we?
