Mushroom Reversible Hat
Easy to knit hat. Knitted in the round ending at the top with decreases. The Rib Band at the bottom is double and can be done in several different ways. I did the provisional cast on using the crochet hook. But it can also be done to desired length, folded over and the bottom can be tacked to the top edge of the rib or just folded up when wearing it. Which ever method you like. Or if you don’t want it doubled, simple knit only half the length and then start the Textured pattern. I wrote it in 3 sizes but you can always cast on less and make it for a toddle or more if you have a person with an larger than usual head. As long as the cast on is divisible by 7.One surprising additional to the hat is the inside design. The Yellow Hat near the close up pictures is the inside design. Different than the outside which gives you two hats in one. I have now included the directions for the strip pattern. I added a poofey version, ideal for someone who has a lot of hair or doesn’t like a snug hat.
The gauge is different depending on the yarn you use. if your off by a stitch or two, it still fits nicely due to the doubled over rib band.
It is knitted in a worsted weight yarn. If you knit loose reduce needle size by one or if you knit tight enlarge you needle size by one. Any worsted weight yarn will work. My favorite is Plymouth Encore. It is 75% acrylic and 25% wool, warm soft and machine washable and dry-able.
If you are doing the Provisional Cast On for the Rib band you will need 2 circular 16” Needles plus the size H or I crochet hook. The other two methods only require 1 set of circular needles and no crochet hook. One stitch marker and I use a locking stitch marker to identify the first double point needle location when working in the decreases on the crown.
The hat takes no more than 190 yards for the largest size so just about any single yarn ball will be enough.
