Bruges (brooj) Lace is a technique of crocheting a long tape of short rows and connecting them with chain loops to the subsequent tapes. Traditional bruges lace has a signature rounded corner or “u-turn” at the end of each row. I’m calling this “My Bruges” because my version is still bruges lace, but the ends are 180 degree turns instead of u-turns. These are simple double crochet and chains, but connected together, they make a pretty lace design.

The beauty of this pattern is that each panel is made in a Join As You Go method. We will start with one panel and add additional panels until we have achieved the size we want. Add a substantial fringe piece to the middle of each panel and your tails will disappear!

I used about 630 yards of Lion Brand Pima Cotton for my first top. It is 7 panels wide and measures 14” long and 32” wide. Since this is so loosely fitted, it will work for several sizes. It all depends on how long you want your top and how long you want the sleeves. The more panels you add, the longer the sleeves will be on the arm and also the more drape you will have at the waist. I used about 450 yards of I Love This Cotton for the second example. It is a shorter sleeve at 23” wide and is 5 panels wide. If you got the pattern bundle with My Bruges Beach Skirt, just make sure you use the same kind of yarn for both patterns.
