This is an easy pattern, for beginner/intermediate knitters who know the basics of knits & purls, and are looking to learn some cable work.

Written instructions (in English) using centimetres and inches, EU/US/UK needle sizes. Chart is also included (but you don’t need to use both - either written instructions or chart are enough).

All my patterns are using Calibri font size 13 in black on white, so they are accessible and easy to read on different screens and when printed. All abbreviations and acronyms are explained in the pattern.

Size

The instructions are for a scarf that is approximately 20 cm wide, with notes to make it wider or narrower. The length is easy to determine: just stop when it is long enough. You can make this for adults or children by adjusting the size.

To make this into an infinity scarf, simply bind the two ends together, using the same yarn.

Recommended yarn

For the scarf in the photo, I used DROPS Alpaca yarn held triple. This gave me a chunky yarn that I worked on 6mm needles (US 10.5 / UK 3). The total length of my scarf is 200 cm (79 inches) and the yardage was about 400 metres (440 yards) – that means 3x400 metres of yarn held triple. But this pattern will work with just about any yarn, as long as you check your gauge and adjust the number of stitches.

Needles

  • Knitting needles of 6mm needles (US 10.5 / UK 3) or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Cable needle one size smaller than the knitting needles.
  • Optional: Tapestry needle to bind the ends, if you want to make it as an infinity scarf.
  • Optional: Crochet hook one size smaller than the knitting needles, to make the edges neater.

Gauge: 15 stitches per 10 cm (= 4 per inch) when using the recommended needle size and yarn. Knit a swatch consisting of Rows 1-20 of the pattern and then decide if you want to add more twists or fewer.

Enjoy!
