Driven mad by its power, he hid in a cave under the Misty Mountains with his “Precious,” as the Ring’s fourth captive. His life extended hundreds of years by the Ring, he survived off raw blind fish and bats, losing his taste for the food Hobbits so love to enjoy. Despite his maliciousness brought on by his constant desire to be reunited with the One Ring, readers and viewers caught occasional glimpses of helpful Sméagol aiding Sam and Frodo on their quest.
