When I was visiting the beautiful Greek island of Mykonos a few years ago, I couldn’t help but notice all the mosaic artwork. It was everywhere…in tile flooring, walls, jewelry, linens, artisans’ workshops, and even in some knitted pieces being sold at sidewalk shops. Flipping through one of Barbara Walker’s knitting stitch treasuries, I came upon the Greek Cross Medallion slip stitch pattern, and knew I had to make a scarf out of it. It uses a seed stitch border, and produces gorgeous results for minimal effort using just 2 contrasting colors. I knit it using Madelinetosh’s Tosh Merino Light yarn in fingering weight in the shades of Celadon and Faded Parka (420 yards per skein). Any weight yarn from fingering weight to worsted would work well for this pattern though, although the yarn should be smooth and regular in texture to best show off the design. I used 290 yards of the lighter, Celadon shade yarn, and 260 yards of the darker, Faded Parka shade yarn for a total of 550 yards for the whole scarf. Fully blocked my scarf measures almost 8 inches in width, and is 6 feet 9 inches in length. If you have never done color work using slip stitch, it is a simple method that uses only one color per line and switches back and forth between 2 colors at the start of every other row. The pattern includes full written instructions and a link to an instructional video.
