Myrina in Atlantis / Grace
Additional Note for Yarn: Designer chose to use one (1) skein {320 yds/100 g} of Jazz Handz Sport{-weight} 6-ply 100%-cotton wound (not spun) yarn in Lilacs, an end-to-end heathery-looking mixture of Purples (Berry, Lupine, and Violet), Fresh Green, Pure White, and Sunshine Yellow.
The Myrina in Atlantis / Grace scarf may also be worn as a vest by adding a front-fastening button or other closure. It is a versatile piece, one featuring the dual motifs of the lilac and various geometric shapes, and its composition and design also admit more than one interpretation.
For example, in Mardi Gras tradition (dating from the 1892 Rex parade in New Orleans), the purple, green, and gold colors -- found in the Lilacs colorway used here -- represent justice, faith, and power, respectively. What has this to do with the Amazons? Not necessarily anything at all, except that those three concepts do seem highly relevant to diplomacy.
Myrina was an Amazon queen who was, of course, a great warrior, but she also excelled in diplomacy. Mentioned in both the Iliad and the histories of Diodorus, Myrina (acting as general in wartime) was a gracious victor, something much more important (and rare) than showing grace in defeat.
The story goes that under Myrina’s leadership the Amazons successfully invaded the lands of the Atlantians (Atlantis), but rather than laying waste to them in their entirety, only razed a single city (Cerne), thus giving the rest of Atlantis the -- then extraordinarily uncommon -- opportunity to surrender.
All the other cities of Atlantis gratefully did so, sincerely praising Myrina’s kindness; in her magnanimous benevolence, she had also rebuilt a new city where Cerne had stood, and in this city Myrina resettled (rather than killing) those Atlantians captured during the war. Henceforth, Atlantis was fiercely loyal to Myrina and strongly supported the Amazons’ undertakings from deep respect for Amazon honor and values.
Be sure to view all five patterns in Themiscyra: The Paradise Island Collection … the Diana / Courage cuff for the wrist, the Thalassa / Power wrap, the Myrina in Atlantis / Grace convertible scarf-vest (this pattern), the Tanllwyth / Wisdom stole, and the Maravilla / Wonder shawlette or head-covering … original knitting designs inspired by legendary Amazons for real women today!
(P.S. Right now, you can buy the entire Themiscyra collection for about $10 less than what you would spend buying each of the five patterns individually; that’s a savings of around 30%. Though we don’t know whether Amazons valued thrift per se, it does seem wise!)
Note Regarding Files Included in Pattern Download: In addition to the actual pattern PDF file, two more files are separately available for download -- the front matter (preface/introduction) and back matter (concerning yarn used) for the collection. Further, if desired by the purchaser, higher-resolution single-page images are available from the designer upon request for any (or all) pages of the pattern.
