Naburn mitts
My home is in the Vale of York next to the River Ouse. It is a place of big skies and arable fields. Before the laying of the railways in the late 19th century the river was used to carry goods to and from the major port of Hull which in turn traded a lot with the Netherlands and up the East coast of the UK. Like the coastal fishermen of these shores, the boatmen of the River Ouse also wore ganseys. These versatile and practical mitts are inspired by the simple stitch patterns of those garments and knitted in local wool. Bouncy, cuddly WYS The Croft DK is spun in Yorkshire from yarn which has travelled down from Shetland.
No cable acrobatics here, just a twisted rib and some knit and purl stitch texture to add interest and rhythm to the knitting process. The finger and thumb ribs are long so that you can adapt to the changing weather and also not need to take them off to use your fingers in the cold. Two sizes are available. They are designed to fit hands with a circumference of 18-20cm for the first size and 20-22cm for the second size.
I hope you enjoy your journey upriver with this pattern.
