In general, a mitered corner can easily be created by placing a 2-stitch decrease at the center of each row, and a 1-stitch increase at the outside edges, to maintain the stitch count and a straight edge.
The rug is made in 4 sections that are joined with a single crochet seam.
At end of forward pass you will have 2 more loops on hook than in last row; after completing the return pass the stitch count will be the same as on the last row. The 2 extra stitches added at each end are eliminated when making the decrease at the center.
