Nami Island Shawl
ABOUT THE PATTERN
Nami Island near Seoul, South Korea is one of the most romantic and picturesque locations I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. If you take a stroll around this enchanted island in the fall, you’ll find vibrant red and gold foliage, picturesque tree-lined lanes, wood bridges over clear pools, museums and artist booths, and small stands selling warm drinks and delicious food.
This crafty circular shawl invokes the fall colors of Nami Island, while the colorwork pattern is reminiscent of the bridges, walking paths, and florals that can be found on Nami Island.
Approximate Measurements
Diameter: 44” (112 cm)
Suggested Yarn:
Croft Fingering by Red Stag Fibre; 100% SW British Blue Faced Leicester; 438 yds (400 m); 100 g (3.5 oz); Fingering Weight in:
Color A: “Bordeaux” 2 skeins or 810 yds (740 m); 185 g (6.5 oz) needed
Color B: “Antique Linen” 1 skein or 371 yds (340 m); 85 g (3.0 oz) needed
Color C: “Antique Leather” 1 skein or 394 yds (360 m); 90 g (3.2 oz) needed
Or a similar fingering weight yarn. Choose solid or mostly solid colored yarn that has good stitch definition and select colors that have enough contrast to allow the colorwork to stand out.
Needles:
US5 (3.75 mm) and US6 (4.0 mm) circular needles of varying lengths (an interchangeable needle set with cords that can connect will work best due to the varying number of stitches that are on the needles throughout the shawl) or size to obtain gauge
Notions:
Tapestry needle, stitch markers (32)
Gauge:
22 sts / 36 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Stockinette Stitch using US 5 (3.75 mm) and in Stranded Colorwork using US 6 (4.0 mm) after a light blocking
Exact gauge is not critical in this pattern but will affect the size of the shawl and yarn requirements.
Techniques Required:
Stranded colorwork, standard increases/decreases, knitting in the round.
Additional Notes:
Pattern is written out, colorwork is charted, and pattern been professionally technical edited.
