Nancy Jo’s Poncho wraps around you with the joy and comfort of finding a long lost friend. The alpaca yarn has beautiful drape and is soft and cozy, and in worsted weight it knits up quickly. Using a mosaic chart from Barbara Walker’s Mosaic Knitting the poncho is knit flat as a rectangle and folded across one shoulder, with a short seam on the other shoulder. The fold locations for each size are specifically designed to align the graphic pattern across the seam, which is garnished with one beautiful button, as can be seen in the photographs.

Finished Dimensions (after folding)
Small: 20” x 21” with a 9” neck opening
Medium: 23” x 24” with a 10” neck opening
Large: 26” x 28” with an 11” neck opening

Yarn
Beroco Ultra Alpaca is worsted weight in skeins of 100 gr/ 215 yards. Two skeins in each of two colors is adequate for sizes Small and Medium. Three skeins of each are needed for Large.

Needles
US 9 or 5.5mm on a 30” circular. A slightly larger needle size than indicated for your yarn is needed for the slipped stitch technique and to allow for more drape.

Notions
Stitch markers or scrap yarn, darning needle, and one beautiful button.

Construction
The poncho is knit flat in a rectangle. It begins and ends with two color or Corrugated ribbing. The two long sides are treated differently: one will be a finished selvedge and the other is seamed part way and also shaped for the neck opening. The standard chart for mosaic knitting is used, which only charts RS rows. You need to pay attention to the chart and neck shaping at the same time, but the project is straightforward, quick and fun, and I’ve included links to some helpful videos.
