A few years ago I inherited a pair of hand knit socks from my Austrian Tante Nanie (Naahnie).
The knee-high socks are knit of hand-spun natural cream - colored wool, on what must have been wire -sized needles. Nanie wore the socks with her Tracht (a traditional and formal Dirndl) on special days.
Every now and then, I take the socks out of the cedar chest, slide my feet into them (am completely astonished at how well they fit) and admire the simple, and delicate beauty of them. Nanie was an avid knitter, and would share her craft with us every year at Christmas.
Enjoy knitting this rendition of these socks,
Caroline
