When Countess Ablaze announced the Tits Out Collective to fight misogny, unfair requests for artists to work for exposure, and raise money for charity, I knew immediately that I wanted to join in. I thought about how strong the fiber community is when we stand together, and how supportive we are of each other in the face of adversity. My mind wandered to the “We Can Do It” Rosie the Riveter posters from WWII, and of Naomi Parker (Fraley), now widely recognized as the most likely real-life source of inspiration for Rosie. I put a modern spin on two versions of hair accessories, a headscarf and a hair tie, adding i-cord and lace touches. The eyelets in each are a nod to Naomi’s polka-dotted head wrap. You get both patterns for one price and one PDF, and in keeping with the charitable theme driving the Collective, all sales from this pattern will be donated to the Durham Rescue Mission’s Women’s Shelter in Durham, NC on a monthly basis from now until the end of time Or until the internet implodes. Or until I get eaten by a dinosaur. Whichever comes first.

One size each, but both are easily adjustable. Headscarf measures approximately 15” wide and 12” long after blocking. Hair tie measures approximately 4” wide and 15” long.

24 sts and 40 rows=4” in garter stitch on US size 5 needles. Headscarf is knit on US size 5. Hair tie is knit on US size 4.

Materials: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, DPNS for working i-cord ties on headscarf. Both pieces can be worked on straight or circular needles.

Headscarf was knit in Countess Ablaze Lady Persephone Sock in colors If I Want Exposure, I’ll Get My Tits Out (MC) and Shit Tea and Tray Bake (CC). Hair tie was knit in Lady Persephone Sock in same colors, plus Expression Fiber Arts Resilient Sock in color Abyss (black version). If using different yarns, you will need approximately 25-30 grams of yarn to knit both patterns.
