I live in the the Nashoba Valley region of Massachusetts. It’s a beautiful area of small towns, farms, rolling hills, ponds and streams, and abundant wildlife. Also, the winters are COLD! Being outside during a New England cold snap requires serious layers to stay warm. These mittens, with their double thick outside shell and warm inner lining fit the bill perfectly.

The design features snowflakes around the wrist, flecks of snow all over, and icicles dripping from the top. The lining is knit separately and neatly stitched in place at the wrist. I find this method less cumbersome than picking up stitches inside the cuff and knitting it in place. It has the advantage of being able to try them on your hands as you go. You can also weave your ends in on the wrong side before you insert the liners into the mittens. I like using something super soft to line my mittens, like baby alpaca or cashmere. This adds a feeling of luxury and tremendous warmth.

The pattern includes 2 sets of charts, one with light color dominant, and one with dark color dominant. I find it easier to knit from charts that match the color values I’m working with. That way I don’t have to reverse the colors in my head while I’m knitting. There are clear instructions and photos to help you complete your project. As always, I am available for pattern support and questions. Just ask!
