What is a Mystery Knit a Long (MKAL)? An MKAL is when the pattern is broken up into a series of clues or parts. What the final piece looks like is a mystery until all the parts have been received.

The Naughty or Nice MKAL will begin on October 10 and run for 8 weeks with new clues sent each Thursday. Additionally, participants in the MKAL will be entered into a drawing (read more below).

About the Pattern

Are cats ever really naughty? Well, it’s hard not to love them even when they misbehave. With images of cats being “naughty” or “nice,” the Naughty or Nice Scarf is a fun double knit scarf purrfect for showing off all the lovable actions of our furry friends.

Double knit, the scarf is fully reversible, featuring opposite color schemes on each side. The design is similar in layout to my Cat Season Scarf, but with “naughty” scenes at one end of the scarf and “nice” scenes at the other end. It’s designed for two colors, but feel free to use yarn scraps and change colors for every section! Solid colors or yarns with subtle or gradual color changes work best.

Instructions are included for the double knitting technique. The finished size of the scarf is approximately 70 inches (178 cm) in length and 5.5 inches (14 cm) in width.

Materials

• Size 2 US (2.75 mm) needles.
• Size 1 US (2.25 mm) needles (optional for a neater cast on edge).
• Approximately 460 yards (420 m) each of two contrasting colors of fingering weight yarn.
• Needle to weave in ends.

Week 1: October 10
Week 2: October 17
Week 3: October 24
Week 4: October 31
Week 5: November 7
Week 6: November 14
Week 7: November 21
Week 8: November 28

Please note that prior to October 10, you will only receive information about the pattern, such as yarn and gauge, and not the full instructions. The first clue will be sent on October 10 when the MKAL starts, with new clues sent every Thursday. The full pattern will be released on the last week of the MKAL on November 28.

If you are new to double knitting, I recommend trying out the technique before the MKAL starts. Try a double knit dishcloth, such as my Cat Playtime Potholder pattern or any of my other free double knit patterns.

Join or visit the Nifty Knitter Designs group on Ravelry to see progress photos of what the scarf should look like during the MKAL, share your project photos with other knitters, or discuss any of my other patterns.
