I have always loved the look of mitered-square blankets and, after casting one on, I wondered if I could somehow incorporate these cute little squares into a sweater. That’s how I began designing Navona.

Navona begins with a line of mitered squares that can be knit in as many colours as you like. The sweater is then constructed from these squares, beginning with the Moss-Stitch circular yoke (complete with a cosy, high neck), down the stockinette body and finishing with the tapered sleeves. Navona is a fun sweater to knit: it has a traditional feel with a modern twist.

Pattern Notes
Navona begins with a line of mitered squares that are finally joined together with a mattress stitch to form a large circle. From here, stitches are picked up from one edge and the circular yoke is formed. When the yoke and neck are completed, stitches are picked up from the other edge of the mitered squares and the sleeves and body are finished.

The main feature of Navona is the mitered squares that can be made using leftover yarn. Each square uses around 14g of DK/8ply yarn. I used three colours for my sample, but you can use as many as you like. Just be sure you get gauge! It’s very important to check the measurement of your mitered squares: each square needs to be 3”x 3” (7.5 x 7.5 cm). Please read the gauge section to find out the best way to measure them.

The pattern is intended to be worn with 0-3” (0 – 7.5 cm) of positive ease. The body length is written to sit at high hip; however, feel free to add extra length if you prefer (just make sure you account for this with extra yardage).

3.75mm (US 5) circular needles.
4 mm (US 6) circular needles.
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles.
Having a range of cables for this project will come in very handy. I suggest 32″(80cm) for the body, a small cable for the mitered squares, and your preferred size for working small circumferences for the neck and sleeves.

Gauge
Mitered squares – each square needs to measure 3” x 3” (7.5 x 7.5 cm). The most accurate way to measure is to knit three squares and take your measurement from the middle square.
20sts and 26 rows to 4”(10 cm) in Moss Stitch using larger needles.

Other
Stitch holders, stitch marker, removable marker, crochet hook, and a tapestry needle.
