Neapolitan ice cream traditionally consists of 3 layers, each of a different color and flavor. It has come to be known as having chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla in it, but when it was first introduced in the 1800s in the United States by the Italians, it meant any combination of 3-layered ice creams. This asymmetrical garter stitch shawlette also contains 3 layers, or stripes. Because it is knit sideways in a vortex shape on the bias, the stripes form across the body of the shawl in a diagonal fashion. I knit it in fingering weight yarn for a nice drape, but any weight yarn from fingering through worsted would work. I used about 166 yards of each of the 3 colors to make this shawl, for about 500 yards total. Blocked it is over 7 feet in length and 13 inches at its deepest point. All 3 sides of this asymmetrical triangle have unique borders. One side is formed naturally by the twists of the colors being carried up the side, while another side forms little points from binding off stitches. The third side is a simple chevrons and lace pattern added once you are happy with your shawl’s size. Knit this shawlette as long or as short as your yarn supply will allow.
