Nestled in Ombré (Scarf)
NB: VAT or state tax will be applied to the purchase price during the paypal transaction where relevant.
Wrap this scarf around your neck once or twice and experience being nestled in a big cloud of cosiness. The integrated tab means the ends will stay put even when you are walking in a heavy wind and the use of 5 colorways creates an unforgettable visual effect. Choose 5 shades of a single color for the appearance of Ombré or 5 distinct colors for a rainbow effect. Pattern is worked by holding two Aran-weight yarns together, shifting to each new colorway one strand at a time.
As the design is written assuming 5 different colorways of yarn, it provides details on how to pair the yarns and when to transition to new colorways. Approximately 778 yards total length of Aran-weight (or heavy worsted) yarn is needed. Since the yarn is held double, you will need to either work from two ends of each skein or split the skeins into two balls for working.
Approximate yarn requirements of each of the five colors, reflecting the colors on the pattern photo (grams are listed for Rauma Vamsegarn) :
- Colorway 1 (Black): 60 yds (30g)
- Colorway 2 (Charcoal): 145 yds (77g)
- Colorway 3 (Gray): 253 yds (includes 10 yds for tab) (136 g)
- Colorway 4 (Light Gray): 208 yds (111g)
- Colorway 5 (Offwhite): 112 yds (59g)
The design is knit flat, back and forth from side to side. Either straight needles or a circular needle work for the body of the scarf, but 2 dpns will be useful for working the tab and also a stitch holder. A tapestry needle will be needed to weave in ends; although you are encouraged to work in most of the ends as you go by using a magic not or spit-splicing as you change colorways.
Pattern is designed for the beginning knitter or to feature a very special yarn and only requires knowledge of a few simply skills: Backward Loop Cast On, Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Sewn Bind Off, Knit, Purl, K2tog, P2tog. Instruction is provided for Lifted Increases. A preferred cast on or bind off may be substituted; these were selected because they create a nice edge which isn’t too tight and they very closely mirror each other in appearance.
Pairs perfectly with the Nestled in Ombré Hat; which is perfect for using up those bits of yarn left from the scarf project. VAMSEGARN by RAUMA is the recommended yarn for this project: to make both projects, 11 skeins are needed (the hat uses only the left overs from the scarf project, no additional yarn needs to be purchased):
