Neuron with Unravelled Myelin Bookmark
This quick to make bookmark gives an artistic interpretation of the process of demyelination, the process that happens to people suffering Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other demyelinating diseases. Usually the long chain (axon), is fully covered by the myelin sheath to help protect the messages moving along it. Here that protective sheath is unravelling, exposing the axon, as the myelin is damaged. The unravelled myelin is still attached for the hope that it can be fixed by the process of remyelination. I have designed this bookmark to be used in conjunction with the MS Readathon, with all proceeds from the sale of this pattern going to MS Australia with the designation of a cure via repair and regeneration so that hopefully remyelination can be a possibility for those living with MS.
This pattern uses Australian terminology, using a 2mm hook and 4ply yarn.
