Have you ever seen a felt cowboy hat put into shape? When I found out about that process I decided it was time to rethink the patterns I had been knitting and then felting. A lot of shaping, a lot more yarn and time was being consumed than was agreeable with my taste. If you wish your hat to be thicker (and heavier I might add) you may use a slightly heavier weight of yarn for one of the yarns. This is a great opportunity to increase your knitting skills as once it is felted all your transgressions will be absorbed into the felt. The videos include most often asked questions as well as a complete bonus video on “Felting on Purpose”.
2 strands of any 2 yarns are held together as 1. Any feltable wool, alpaca, mohair, etc are suitable as long as the overall weight/yardage is 220yds/100grms for the average size and 280yds/110grms+ for the xl brim. Using alpaca or brushed mohair exclusively may render an undesirable floppy fabric once felted (caution on over-felting) but the choice is up to you!
