New Horizons is part of the New Horizons Collection. The collection is great value for money compared with buying the individual patterns.

New Horizons was designed to be knit using any fingering weight yarn (original worked using Lichtfaden Rei) in two or more colours with the colours being semi solid/speckles and each incorporating elements of the others. However, there is no reason why your colours could not be boldly contrasting, tonal or the same colour but different textures; what about using one solid and a gradient, two fingerings with a kidsilk held with one of them, a fingering and a Silk Halo/Fuzzy Mohair (fingering/sport weight) … the world is your oyster? Make your New Horizon your own and embrace the change.

New Horizons is a top down, crescent shaped shawl that is easy to knit and easy to wear. A striped, stocking-stitch, body leads to a simple lace design that is surrounded by broken garter ridges which leads to a garter stitch edge that flares into the pointed edge though these points could quite easily be blocked into a gentler scalloped edge. Easy to enlarge or reduce with the ability to introduce additional colours, repeat the body chart, repeat the lace chart and to end with either a picot bind-off or a simple stretchy bind off – again, make it your own! This is the perfect project for travelling, tv knitting or a social gathering – especially knit-night!

The original New Horizons was worked in two skeins of Lichtfaden Rei Fingering (359m/100g) and used 234m/60g of Yarn A and 350m/98g of Yarn B working thirteen repeats of Chart 2 and one repeat of Chart 3. This pattern is suitable for most fingering weight yarns – choose your favourite yarn or here is a list of some of my favourite fingering weight yarns that would be wonderful for this shawl - Lichtfaden Rei Mohair, Silk Halo or Cashmere Silk Fingering, Pandia’s Jewels Nimbus or Singularity, Dye Ninja Camel Silk Fingering, Handmaiden Fine Yarn Swiss Silk, Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, Miss Babs Sojourn, Posh Yarn Sylvia, Gretchen or Natasha 4ply, Skein Queen Ripple or Wriggle, Walk Collection Cozy Merino Fingering or any other fingering weight yarn including alpaca blends as this shawl does not need to be hard blocked into points.

YOU WILL NEED - Circular needles (sizes given above - all but first size will need to be about 1m in length to accommodate the stitches), stitch markers, needle (for weaving in ends), blocking pins and mats.

If you like my designs please join us in the Boo Group where you will find a place to discuss my patterns, show off your knitting and hear about KALs and MKALs.
