Newbury Street Cloche
There is some debate in fashion circles, but the invention of the cloche hat is attributed to the French milliner Caroline Reboux in 1908. It really took hold with the general female population in the 1920’s and was closely associated with the iconic Flapper, but other women adopted the fashion as well. They could tuck their long hair under the hat giving the illusion of a bobbed style without having to actually cut their hair. It is fashionable, flattering to everyone, and it is has remained in, or on the fringes of, the fashion world for over 100 years. My version of the classic cloche features the Catherine Wheel stitch. A catherine wheel is also a type of firework and this pattern creates explosions of color utilizing double crochets stitched together or into shells. The effect is luminous and will add some sparkle to your winter wardrobe.
