Newport Fog Shawl
Newport Fog Shawl, a winged triangular shawl, was inspired the very foggy weather in Newport, RI, that arrived for Volvo Ocean Race 2018. Billowing fog bands greeted the seven racing yachts as the entered Newport harbor on May 8, 2018. The fog continued to appear along with sun and rain for next 13 days. Their race in the harbor was in sunshine, but the fog moved in as they departed on the horizon providing a special beauty and peace.
This winged triangular shawl is worked from the top down with 4 stitch increases on RS rows and 2 stitch increases on WS rows. Every 2 rows the shawl stitch count increases by 6 stitches. These increases make each row successively wider, so the shawl started with a tab cast on grows to hundreds of stitches.
Finished size: The shawl is approximately 60 in /152.4 m wide tip to tip and 23 in / 58.72cm deep at center back.
Skills: It is suitable for an advanced beginner with knit, purl, yarn over, and k2tog. Instructions are charted and written. Pattern has been tech edited and test knit.
Most DK weight yarns may be used for the shawl. Make a Summer weight with cotton and then a Winter weight with wool for yourself. Use your imagination to mix colors in the shawl.
Gauge is not crucial in this pattern; however a variance in gauge will result in requiring more or less yarn, and different overall dimensions.
