The idea for the Nieve Hat came from a combination of events following our recent moving to New Jersey from Europe.

First, I wanted a hat that would protect both my ears and my husband’s from the fierce local cold (yes it is cold for my standards, a lot more than back home) + additional wind chill when biking during winter.

Second, we were stuck at home for 2 entire days during a major snowstorm… and the rest is history (Nieve means snow in Spanish).

Hat is crocheted in the round from a ribbing brim upwards. Brim is worked alternatively into back and front loops of half double crochet stitches. It’s sturdy and warm yet stretchy, and fits most adult head sizes, men or women.

Synthetic yarn was used for practicality: machine washable and dryable, because of the pom-pom.
