Night Creatures Mittens
FILE INFO: Pattern is 7 pages long (the nitty gritty is over 4 pages), 2.1MB. Pattern is charted.
Size: Adult S (M, L, XL)
Yarn: Outer Mittens - Cascade 220 Sport, 50g/164 yards (150m), MC - 1 skein, CC - 1 skein, TC - 20 yards.
Lining - Knit One Crochet Two Cria Lace, 100g/522 yards (507m), 1 skein.
See Notes for further yarn discussion.
Needles: Size 2 (3, 4, 5) US, 2.75 (3.25, 3.5, 3.75) mm, or size needed to get gauge. Pattern may be knit on double points, a long circular for magic loop, or on 2 circulars. Finished mitten size is determined by gauge/needle.
Actual Measurements: 8.75” (9.25”, 9.75”, 10”) circumference and 9.75” (10”, 10.24”, 10.5”) long.
To Fit: Unlined - Choose a size that’s at least 1/2” larger than the circumference of your hand, measured around the palm, not including the thumb. When in doubt, go larger.
Lined - Choose the size about 1” larger than the circumference of your hand. When in doubt, go larger.
Notions: Stitch marker, ruler, smooth waste yarn for thumb gusset holder, darning needle.
Outer Mitten Gauge: 27 (26, 25, 24) stitches and 33 (32, 31, 30) rounds per 4” 10cm in pattern. See Notes for more info.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Knitting in the round, long-tail cast-on, increasing and decreasing, 2 color knitting.
Notes:
These mittens are knit in the round from the bottom up. The body of the mitten and thumb gusset are knit as one, with thumb stitches left on scrap yarn. Thumb stitches are then picked up and knit after the body of the mitten is finished. After the outer shell is knit, stitches are picked up from the inside edge of the I-cord cast-on and the lining is knit.
Use any plied wool yarn you can knit to the required gauge for the outer mittens. (We liked a lighter color for the MC and a darker version for the CC because it looks like dark shapes at night.) Fine luxury yarns that make great mitten linings seem to come and go. If you can’t find the required lining yarn, feel free to substitute any lace or fingering weight yarn that will be a treat for your hands. I like alpaca, mohair, and cashmere and blends.
The rust-colored mittens are in Cascade 220 Sport in MC - 2453, CC - 9408, and TC - 9451. They are lined with Knit One Crochet Two Cria Lace in color 601.
The green mitten is knit in Cascade 220 Sport in MC - 9448, CC - 9566, and TC - 8886. It is lined with Knit One Crochet Two Cria Lace in color 239.
The blue in 2446, 8885, and 281 for trim. They’re lined in 281.
The black and grey are 9620 and 8555 with 8895 trim.
The blue and charcoal are 9451 and 4002 with Cascade 220 Superwash Sport in 858 for trim.
Swiss darning is used to accentuate the eyes of the mouse, owl, and tree. Either Swiss darn these stitches in your TC, or, if they need it, with the MC. Alternately, yellow would be super spooky!
