After Swinging on the Gate, I was hankering after another helping of addictive linen stitch! The result is this relaxed, easy-to-make, side-to-side jumper.

It is worked from cuff to cuff in one piece and only requires two long seams from cuff to bottom corner.

The colourwork, although it looks intricate, is easy and involves no stranding - only one colour is worked per row.

If you don’t want to stick to the original colour sequence, make up your own - this is a great project for using up scraps, e.g. sock yarn remnants.

The jumper looks good both worn with a lot or just a little positive ease. See finished garment measurements in Picture 8. The sample is a Size S/M shown on a Size S model.

The major part of the pattern is written. The mosaic-like pattern bands are charted, not spelt out line by line.

Skills

Only basic knitting skills are required: cast on, bind off, knit, purl, slip, pick up and knit. Increases and decreases are explained in the pattern.

Materials

Use fingering or sport weight yarn and circular needles that will get you the required tension (gauge). Please note that, for the linen stitch, a larger needle size is used than the yarn usually calls for.

For the original model, you will need:

  • Drops Baby Merino (100% wool):

    • 3-4-4 balls Petrol
    • 2-3-4 balls Light Grey Mix
    • 2-2-3 balls North Sea
    • 2-2-3 balls Olive Mix
    • 1-1-2 balls Light Sea Green
    • 1 ball Light Lavender Mix
    • 1 ball Lime
  • main needles: two 5mm (US 8) circular needles, one of them at least 100 cm long, or size to get you the correct tension in linen stitch

  • 4mm circular needle, at least 80 cm long, or 1mm smaller than main needles

  • 4mm circular needle, 50 cm long, or 1mm smaller than main needles. Alternatively you can use 4mm double-pointed needles.

  • 3mm circular needle, at least 100 cm long, or 2mm smaller than main needles

  • tapestry needle, scissors, safety pins

About the name

I love slip jigs almost as much as I love slipped stitches! They have a nine-eight time signature and a relaxed feel even if played at speed.

What’s the name of the one in the last picture? - Message me if you think you know, and I might pull your name out of the hat in a monthly draw to win the pattern.

Many thanks to my crafting and singing friend Angie for modelling, who also happens to have an impressive designing career under her belt!
